American Girl Book Club Meets Felicity

Maddie and Clara play with the rag dolls they made at the American Girl Book Club.
Our American Girl Book Club learned that it's a lot trickier to make your own dolls than it is to buy them.

Our American Girl Book Club meets on the first Wednesday of each month to discuss a different American Girl book and make a new craft.

This month, we met Felicity and made rag dolls—just like they did in the Revolutionary War era, which is when Felicity's from.
Ms. Kim helps Maggie decorate her rag doll.
If you have a child who likes the American Girl books or dolls, then she can join the fun. They can even bring their dolls with them, if they like. (Of course, the dolls aren’t required.)

Our next meeting is 4 p.m. on March 2 in the children’s section of our Main Branch on Mentor Avenue. The girls will be meeting Caroline.

You can register your child for the book club on our web site or by calling (440) 255-8811 ext. 221.

Our sock hop with MaryEllen

Faith keeps her hoop moving during the hula-hoop contest at our sock hop Saturday.
We welcomed the newest historical American Girl, MaryEllen, with a party—and not just any party. MaryEllen's a 1950's girl, so we threw her a sock hop!

There were crafts, games, rootbeer floats, and the girls all learned how to do the twist and hand jive.
The girls try their hand at the hand jive.
The girls also competed in hula-hoop and bubble-blowing contests, but it was all in good fun.
The girls see who can blow the biggest bubblegum bubble.
We love the American Girl books so much at Mentor Public Library that we have a book club dedicated to them.

We meet on the first Wednesday of each month to discuss a different American Girl book and make a new craft.

Our next meeting is 4 p.m. on Feb. 3 in the children’s section of our Main Branch on Mentor Avenue. The girls will meet Felicity.

Meet the newest American Girl, Maryellen, at Mentor Public Library

Kids can come to a sock hop with the newest American Girl, Maryellen, on Jan. 23 at Mentor Public Library.
We love the American Girl books so much at Mentor Public Library that we have a book club dedicated to them.

So it's only natural that we'd have a special program for the newest American Girl, Maryellen.

Maryellen’s a 1950s girl who follows her heart instead of the crowd; so we're throwing her a sock hop on Saturday, Jan. 23, at our Main Branch. There’ll be crafts, games and fun!

Our Meet Maryellen party is open to kids from six to 12 years old. You don’t need to be a member of our American Girl Book Club to come to the party. Of course, you can totally join the book club too, if you want!

Our American Girl Book Club meets on the first Wednesday of each month to discuss a different American Girl book and make a new craft.

American Girl Book Club meeting newest American Girl, Mary Ellen

Our American Girl Book Club will meet two American Girls in January: Kaya and the newest American Girl, Maryellen.
Our American Girl Book Club will have a busy new year. They're meeting two American Girls this January.

Usually our book club meets a new girl each month. First they, talk about their book. Then they make a craft that ties into the book. They've made everything from kites to rag dolls to dreamcatchers.

In January, they'll meet Kaya their regular meeting at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 6, at our Main Branch.

Then, we're having a special program for the newest American Girl, Maryellen, on Saturday, Jan. 23. Maryellen's a 1950s girl who follows her heart instead of the crowd.

You can get to know her better during our Meet Maryellen party. There'll be crafts, games and, of course, a sock hop!

Both the American Girl Book Club and Meet Maryellen party are open to kids from six to 12 years old. You don't need to be a member of the book club to come to the party.

You can register your child for either program on our web site or by calling (440) 255-8811 ext. 221.

American Girl Book Club meets Molly

Abby tears newspaper to stuff her sit-upon.
You know our American Girl Book Club? The one where kids make everything from kites to rag dolls to dreamcatchers and talk about classic American Girl books?

Well, it just got easier for your child (or children) to join. We’ve now stretched the age range so kids from six to 12 years old can get in on the fun.

Our American Girl Book Club meets on the first Wednesday of each month to discuss a different American Girl book and make a new craft.
Claire ties a bit of string onto the end of her bookmark.
This week, the girls met Molly and made a pair of crafts: a sit-upon (a kind of pillow) and a special bookmark.

They also learned how to dance the hula like Molly and her friend on Halloween.

If you have a child who likes the American Girl books or dolls, then he or she can join the fun. They can even bring their dolls with them, if they like. (Of course, the dolls aren’t required.)

Book clubs for kids at Mentor Library

Katie, Mckenzie and Tabitha make a quilt together during the most recent meeting of our American Girl Book Club.
Trying to find a way to motivate your child to read this summer? Maybe they'd have more fun if reading was group activity.

While most people think of book clubs as for adults, Mentor Library has clubs for all ages.

If your kid likes superheroes, Adventure Time or Spongebob, then they might love our Comics Club.

Our Comics Club is for any 8- through 12-year-old who likes to read, talk about or draw sequential art. We love everything from Amelia Rules to Batman to Bone.)

Our Comic Club meets from 7 to 8 p.m. on the first Tuesday of every month at our Main Branch. Our next meeting is July 7.

At a typical meeting, the kids talk about a special theme. Then we introduce the kids to graphic novels and comics that can be found in the library’s collection.

We close out each meeting with free time for the kids to draw or read.
Luke and Caleb show off their super gear after the Comics Club meeting.
If your kid enjoys American Girl—the books or the dolls—then they'll love our American Girl Book Club.

They meet on the first Wednesday of each month to discuss a different American Girl book and make a new craft. Many of them even bring their dolls with them, if they like. (Of course, the dolls aren’t required.)

Our next meeting is 4 p.m. on July 1 in the children’s section of our Main Branch on Mentor Avenue. The girls will be meeting Addy.

You can register your child for the book club on our web site or by calling (440) 255-8811 ext. 221.
Claire reads to Ruckus during a Paws to Read session at Mentor Library.
If your child is an animal lover, then they'll enjoy Paws to Read.

Paws to Read pairs young readers (between the ages of six and 12 years old) with therapy dogs, who listen to the children as they read. It provides your child with a sympathetic, furry audience and helps them be more comfortable while reading.

Registration for the next sessions start July. There will be two 30-minute sessions on July 16 at our Main Branch; one beginning at 6:30 p.m., the next at 7 p.m. We only have so many therapy dogs; so, unfortunately, there’s a limit on how many kids can participate each month.

Additionally, those spots tend to fill up quickly, so contact the children’s department at Mentor Public Library soon if you think you child could benefit from Paws to Read.
And remember to read with your child too.

Eva, Claire and Sabrina show off the Mardi Gras masks they made at Mentor Library.
We met twice the American Girls and made twice the crafts during our American Girl Book Club meeting last week!

Our club met Cecile and Marie-Grace and used their books to take a trip down to New Orleans. We then decorated Mardi Gras masks and made friendship bracelets.
Clara and Maddie string their friendship bracelets.

American Girl Book Club meets Josefina and makes guacamole

The young ladies of our American Girl Book Club made guacamole when they met Josefina Wednesday.
Our American Girl Book Club always make a fun craft when they get together. They've made kites, rag dolls, dreamcatchers and more, while talking about classic American Girl books.

But this time, they got a little messy.

This week, they met Josefina, a young girl who grew up in New Mexico while it was still under Mexican rule.
Libby carefully scoops the avocado into the bowl.
The girls also learned a little about Josefina's culture by making guacamole. They mashed and mixed the avocado themselves.

When they were finished, they even had time to make God's-Eyes crafts for themselves and maracas for their dolls.
Our American Girl Book Club meets on the first Wednesday of each month to discuss a different American Girl book and make a new craft.

If you have a child who likes the American Girl books or dolls, then he or she can join the fun. They can even bring their dolls with them, if they like. (Of course, the dolls aren’t required.)

A 'mini' party with mega fun at Mentor Library

Lynn laughs it up with her doll, Sarah, during the American Girl party at Mentor Library on Valentine's Day.
About half of the guests at Mentor Library's Valentine's Day party were only 18 inches tall. They were, after all, American Girl dolls.

But their short stature fit the party's pastiche. The kids who came to our party Saturday played mini-games, made tiny clothes for their dolls and snacked on mini pizzas.

The only thing that wasn't 'mini' at this party was the fun.
Olivia made a party hat and horn for her American girl doll, Samantha.
The girls got to decorate their dolls for the party, making them tiny party horns—yes, that's apparently what you call those little blower things—and hats.

And the snacks may have been for the kids, but they were still delightfully lilliputian. The girls made little ice cream cones by scooping ice cream into Bugles and tiny cakes with cookies and frosting.
The girls made tiny cakes for their dolls using cookies and frosting.
If your kid (or kids) love American Girl, we have a club dedicated to their books.

Join the fun this Valentine's Day at Mentor Library

Brianna makes valentines Monday at Mentor Library's Main Branch.
We started celebrating Valentine's Day early at Mentor Library and the fun has just begun.

On Monday, kids used melted crayon shavings, heart-shaped stencils and wax paper to make their own translucent valentines Monday at our Main Branch. We also played Valentine's Day-themed games and read poetry!
Akshat and our volunteer, Sam, check out how the light transforms his translucent heart.
And the party's not over! There are still more Valentine's Day crafts to makes and candy hearts to distribute. All three of our branches have programs scheduled this Saturday, and your kids can join the fun.

Children can come to our Headlands Branch from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (or until supplies run out) and make a pretty Valentine tea-light craft. You can also grab a cookie while you're there as part of Patron Appreciation Day.

Meanwhile, at our Mentor-on-the-Lake Branch, kids in kindergarten through fifth grade can play a special game of Valentine's Day Bingo and make valentines for their loved ones at 2:30 p.m.

Finally, we're having an American Girl party at our Main Branch that starts at 2 p.m.

Girls ages 6 to 12 can bring their American Girl dolls (or any other 18-inch doll) to the library for an afternoon of mini-crafts, mini-snacks and American Girl games. The only thing that won’t be “mini” is the fun!

You can register for any of these programs on our website or by calling the respective branch of Mentor Library.

American Girl Book Club makes dolls of their own

Abby names the rag doll she made Mia during the American Girl Book Club meeting at Mentor Library.
Usually the young ladies of our American Girl Book Club bring their dolls with them to the meetings. This time, they made their own.

On Wednesday, the girls made rag dolls—just like Felicity did while growing up in Revolutionary War-era America. (Felicity was the book club's American Girl of the month.)

The girls used yarn, fabric scraps, markers and ribbon to make their own dolls and give them personality. (And they snacked on gingerbread cookies while making them.)
Sophie works on her rag doll while her American Girl doll rests.
Our American Girl Book Club meets on the first Wednesday of each month to discuss a different American Girl book and make a new craft.

If you have a daughter who likes the American Girl books or dolls, then she can join the fun. She can even bring her dolls with her, if she likes. (Of course, the dolls aren’t required.)

Our next meeting is 4 p.m. on March. 4 in the children’s section of our Main Branch on Mentor Avenue. The girls will be meeting Caroline.

Giselle and Lynn pick which markers they want to use to draw their dolls' features.
We're also having a special American Girl program at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, at our Main Branch—Celebrate the American Girl Way.

Girls ages 6 to 12 can bring their American Girl dolls (or any other 18-inch doll) to the library for an afternoon of mini-crafts, mini-snacks and American Girl games. The only thing that won't be "mini" is the fun!

You can register for the party on our web site, as well, or call Mentor Library to sign up.

Meeting Kaya with the American Girl Book Club

The question asked was, "Who wants glitter?"
Dolls, books and glitter—it was a good day for our American Girl Book Club.

On Wednesday, the girls of our book club met and talked about Meet Kaya, the story of a young girl from the Nez Perce tribe who earns the trust and respect of her elders. The girls also made dreamcatchers. (Yes, that's where the glitter came in. It finds its way into many crafts around these parts.)
Abby threads the yarn through her dreamcatcher.
Our American Girl Book Club meets on the first Wednesday of each month to discuss a different American Girl book and make a new craft.

Meeting the girls of our American Girl Book Club

Lynn tries to fly her kite indoors during our most recent American Girl Book Club.
There aren't a lot of book clubs out there for elementary school-aged girls.

But considering how popular our American Girl Book Club is, maybe there should be more.

Since we started the book club last year, anywhere between a dozen and 30 girls have come to each meeting. A lot of them bring their dolls with them, but a doll isn't mandatory.
Lindsay designs her paper kite during our American Girl Book Club meeting.
The girls are always eager to talk about the American Girl book they've read over the last month.

They also make a craft. They've made everything from dream catchers to jewelry to guacamole to God's eyes.

This month, we met Kit. Then we made paper kites, just like they used to do when Kit was a kid.

Kim Sidorick, our children's services manager, had the idea for the book club after we held an American Girl-themed tea party two years ago. She thought the book club would help bring together girls with like interests who want to have fun.

After all, the books are classics and still circulate well at the library.
Giselle and Abby play a game, trying to drop clothespins into a bottle.
Our last meeting of the year is Dec. 3. (The meetings are always 4 to 5 p.m. at our Main Branch on the first Wednesday of the month.) The girls will meet Samantha.

If you have a girl who is between eight and 12 years, then they can join the fun. They don't need a doll or anything like that. However, they should read Meet Samantha beforehand so they can participate in the discussion.

You can register your child for the book club on our web site or by calling (440) 255-8811 ext. 221. Registration isn't mandatory, but it makes it a lot easier for us to prepare if we have a good idea how many kids are going to be there.
All of the girls at our American Girl Book Club, like Layla here, are super girls.

This Week in Adorable: Our American Girl Book Club Makes a Quilt

Our American Girl Book Club had its first meeting of the year last Wednesday.

They met Kirsten, worked together to make a quilt and played pick-up sticks.

But why talk about it when I can show you the pictures?

Isabella Glauser and Sushmita Rajan arrange different fabrics to see how they want to design their quilt squares
Bela Moore layers her fabric swatches.
The girls worked together to make their quilt.
Katie Klepcyk signs her finished quilt square.
Abby Colbow puts the finishing touches on her square.
Jacquelyn Minich and Isabella play pick-up stick when they're finished with their quilt.
The book club will meet Marie Grace and Cecile during its next meeting on Feb. 5.

If you have a girl who is between eight and 12 years, then they can join the fun. They don't need a doll or anything like that. However, they should read Meet Marie Grace and Meet Cecile beforehand so they can participate in the discussion.

You can register your child for the book club on our web site or by calling (440) 255-8811 ext. 221.
